Merchant Navy is a Global

Merchant Navy is a non-combatant commercial fleet, which deals with

Directorate General of Shipping is the governing body of Merchant Navy who deals with implementation of shipping policy and legislation so as to ensure the safety of life and ships at sea, prevention of marine pollution, promotion of maritime education and training in co-ordination with the International Maritime Organization, regulation of employment and welfare of seamen, development of coastal shipping, augmentation of shipping tonnage, examination and certification of Merchant Navy Officers, Supervision and Control of the allied offices under its administrative jurisdiction.
How to Join Merchant Navy
The Entrance Exam for Merchant Navy is conducted by Indian Maritime University and the Exam is Called CET – Common Entrance Test.
IMU CET is conducted to get admission into undergraduate & postgraduate courses in the area of marine. These programmes are offered by the IMU and its affiliated Institution.

Qualification Criteria
For
DNS:
- Qualifying
Exam:
Candidates have to pass 10+2/ equivalent examination or B.Sc or BE/B.Tech
(from IIT or college recognized by AICTE).
- Subjects:
Candidates have to pass 10+2/ equivalent examination with PCM or
B.Sc in PCM, Electronics with Physics as individual subject in one of
the years.
- Minimum
Marks:
Candidates have to secure minimum 60% marks (10+2/ equivalent examination)
or not less than 50% marks (B.Sc & BE/B.Tech).
For
B.Sc:
- Qualifying
Exam:
Candidates have to pass 10+2/ equivalent examination.
- Subjects:
Candidates have to pass 10+2/ equivalent examination with PCM &
English subjects.
- Minimum
Marks:
Candidates have to secure minimum 60% marks in PCM & 50% marks in
English.
For
B.Tech:
- Qualifying
Exam:
Candidates have to clear 10+2/ equivalent examination.
- Subjects:
Candidates have to qualify 10+2/ equivalent examination with PCM &
English subjects.
- Minimum
Marks:
Candidates have to score at least 60% marks in PCM & 50% marks in
English.
For
B.Tech (Lateral Entry):
- Qualifying
Exam:
Candidates have to pass Diploma in Engineering.
For
MBA:
- Qualifying
Exam:
Candidates have to pass their bachelor degree from a recognized university.
- Minimum
Marks:
Candidates have to obtain at least 50% marks. Score 50% marks in English
Subject in 10th/12th/ UG Degree.
For
M.Tech:
- Qualifying
Exam:
Candidates have to pass their graduation or equivalent degree from a
recognized university.
- Minimum
Marks:
Candidates have to secure minimum 60% aggregated marks.
NOTE: There will be a 5%
relaxation in eligibility marks for SC/ST category).
Other Criteria:
- Before
apply for this exam, candidates are informed to apply for passport before
taking admission.
- If
candidates want to apply to apply for marine courses, they have to show
their medical fitness certificate by Doctors approved by Director General
of Shipping.
- Appearing
candidates can also apply but they have to qualify their examination on or
before 31st July 2019.
Why
pre sea training is required?
Pre sea training is
essential for obtaining CDC. According to the D.G. Shipping rules, the
eligibility conditions for applicant seaman other than Certificated Officers -
- An applicant for issue of CDC as Deck, Engine and Catering (Saloon) Trainee shall have successfully completed the pre-sea training for ratings from an approved training institute as prescribed under sub-clause (b) of clause (ii) of sub-rule (2) of rule 28 of the Merchant Shipping (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarer's) Rules, 1998.
- An applicant for issue of CDC shall have undergone the basic familiarization training and instructions as prescribed under sub-rule (1) of rule 33 of the Merchant Shipping (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarer's) Rules, 1998.
- In case of issue of CDC on compassionate grounds, the Director General of shipping may relax any or all of the provisions of this rule except sub-rules (5) and (6) of this rule in respect of all categories.

Physical Fitness
Candidates, those seek admission to marine courses (DG Shipping-approved courses) have to produce a medical fitness certificate which is approved by the Director General of Shipping. Candidates with Disability (DA), they are not eligible for admission to marine programme. Candidates have to physically fit & meet the medical necessities as specified by DGS guidelines.Eye Sight
Candidates must have good binocular vision. Their vision should be 6/6 (normal) in each eye separately. Candidates joining B. Tech (Marine Engineering) degree course, their vision should be unaided 0.5 (6/12) in each eye or 0.67 (6/9) in the better eye and 0.33 (6/18) in the other eye. Those applied for DNS, B.Sc. (Nautical Science) & B.Sc. (Maritime Science) degree course, their vision should be unaided 1.0 (6/6) in the better eye and 0.67 (6/9) in the other eye.
