erchant Navy is the backbone of international trade, carrying cargo all over the world. The merchant ships employ a huge number of workers to carry and deliver goods from one country to another. Without the merchant navy, much of the import-export business would come to a grinding halt!

Merchant Navy is a Global Industry Centrally Controlled & Monitored by IMO Conventions. There after each Country has its own controlling authority e.g. D.G. Shipping India. The Merchant Navy is a non-combatant commercial fleet, which deals with transporting cargo and occasionally, passengers, by sea. Its fleet is therefore composed of passenger vessels, cargo liners, tankers, carriers, as well as other special types of vehicles. 

A career in this field is full of adventure and long voyages to exotic places. Trained people are required for the three main departments of the ship the deck, the engine and the service department. There are, thus, many career options that are available for any youngster that has dreams to join the merchant navy.

The Merchant Navy is commercial aspects of Shipping Industry and Indian navy is the defence aspects. So there is a clear distinct difference between Merchant Navy and Indian Navy. Merchant navy fleet which basically deals with the transporting cargo by sea, to destinations around the world.

Who is the governing body of Merchant Navy?

Directorate General of Shipping is the governing body of Merchant Navy who deals with implementation of shipping policy and legislation so as to ensure the safety of life and ships at sea, prevention of marine pollution, promotion of maritime education and training in co-ordination with the International Maritime Organization, regulation of employment and welfare of seamen, development of coastal shipping, augmentation of shipping tonnage, examination and certification of Merchant Navy Officers, Supervision and Control of the allied offices under its administrative jurisdiction.



How to Join Merchant Navy

The Entrance Exam for Merchant Navy is conducted by Indian Maritime University and the Exam is Called CET – Common Entrance Test.

IMU CET is conducted to get admission into undergraduate & postgraduate courses in the area of marine. These programmes are offered by the IMU and its affiliated Institution.


The following programmes are offered by the Indian Maritime University:

Undergraduate Programmes:

4-Year B.Tech (Marine Engineering)
4-Year B.Tech (Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering)
3-Year B.Sc (Maritime Science)  
3-Year B.Sc (Nautical Science)
3-Year B.Sc (Ship Building & Repair)
 3-Year BBA (Logistics, Retailing & E-Commerce)
 1-Year Diploma in Nautical Science leading to B.Sc. (Applied Nautical Science)

Postgraduate Programmes:

2-Year MBA (Port and Shipping Management)
2-Year MBA (International Transportation and Logistics Management)
2-Year M.Sc (Commercial Shipping & Logistics)
2-Year M.Tech (Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering)
2-Year M.Tech (Dredging and Harbour Engineering)
2-Year M.Tech (Marine Technology & Management)

Postgraduate Diploma Programmes: 

1 Year PGDME (Post Graduate Diploma in Marine Engineering)

Research Programmes: 

Ph.D and M.S(by Research) programmes

Qualification Criteria

For DNS:
  • Qualifying Exam: Candidates have to pass 10+2/ equivalent examination or B.Sc or BE/B.Tech (from IIT or college recognized by AICTE).
  • Subjects: Candidates have to pass 10+2/ equivalent examination with PCM or B.Sc in PCM, Electronics with Physics as individual subject in one of the years.
  • Minimum Marks: Candidates have to secure minimum 60% marks (10+2/ equivalent examination) or not less than 50% marks (B.Sc & BE/B.Tech).
For B.Sc:
  • Qualifying Exam: Candidates have to pass 10+2/ equivalent examination.
  • Subjects: Candidates have to pass 10+2/ equivalent examination with PCM & English subjects.
  • Minimum Marks: Candidates have to secure minimum 60% marks in PCM & 50% marks in English.
For B.Tech:
  • Qualifying Exam: Candidates have to clear 10+2/ equivalent examination.
  • Subjects: Candidates have to qualify 10+2/ equivalent examination with PCM & English subjects.
  • Minimum Marks: Candidates have to score at least 60% marks in PCM & 50% marks in English.
For B.Tech (Lateral Entry):
  • Qualifying Exam: Candidates have to pass Diploma in Engineering.
For MBA:
  • Qualifying Exam: Candidates have to pass their bachelor degree from a recognized university.
  • Minimum Marks: Candidates have to obtain at least 50% marks. Score 50% marks in English Subject in 10th/12th/ UG Degree.
For M.Tech:
  • Qualifying Exam: Candidates have to pass their graduation or equivalent degree from a recognized university.
  • Minimum Marks: Candidates have to secure minimum 60% aggregated marks.
NOTE: There will be a 5% relaxation in eligibility marks for SC/ST category).
Other Criteria:
  • Before apply for this exam, candidates are informed to apply for passport before taking admission.
  • If candidates want to apply to apply for marine courses, they have to show their medical fitness certificate by Doctors approved by Director General of Shipping.
  • Appearing candidates can also apply but they have to qualify their examination on or before 31st July 2019.



Why pre sea training is required?

Pre sea training is essential for obtaining CDC. According to the D.G. Shipping rules, the eligibility conditions for applicant seaman other than Certificated Officers -
  1. An applicant for issue of CDC as Deck, Engine and Catering (Saloon) Trainee shall have successfully completed the pre-sea training for ratings from an approved training institute as prescribed under sub-clause (b) of clause (ii) of sub-rule (2) of rule 28 of the Merchant Shipping (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarer's) Rules, 1998.
  2. An applicant for issue of CDC shall have undergone the basic familiarization training and instructions as prescribed under sub-rule (1) of rule 33 of the Merchant Shipping (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarer's) Rules, 1998.
  3. In case of issue of CDC on compassionate grounds, the Director General of shipping may relax any or all of the provisions of this rule except sub-rules (5) and (6) of this rule in respect of all categories.
What is pre sponsorship?

Ans. Pre sponsorship is an opportunity of job for the students before getting skilled for the particular job. The training is arranged according to the requirement of the company. Company provides pre sponsorship due to high demand of skilled manpower in shipping industry.

There is an uncertainty for the company because student can join other company after completion of his training & the company will have to bear a heavy loss if they pay the training expenses.

  1. Job surety - Pre sponsorship gives surety to the students that after the successful completion of training, they will be absorbed onboard by the sponsored company.
  2. Easy availability of bank loan - Pre sponsor letter helps students to avail the bank loan for their training as it is job surety letter so on the basis of this letter bank easily grant loan to the students.
Can we apply for Education Loan?

Yes, Students can apply for bank loan. There are some important reasons why bank easily provide loan for the training:

  1. Pre - Assured Job (Pre sponsor letter)
  2. Highest Packages any Industry can offer.
  3. Letters pertaining to the approval of courses.
  4. References of Sanction of loan proposals for all banks.

Physical Fitness

Candidates, those seek admission to marine courses (DG Shipping-approved courses) have to produce a medical fitness certificate which is approved by the Director General of Shipping. Candidates with Disability (DA), they are not eligible for admission to marine programme. Candidates have to physically fit & meet the medical necessities as specified by DGS guidelines.

Eye Sight

Candidates must have good binocular vision. Their vision should be 6/6 (normal) in each eye separately. Candidates joining B. Tech (Marine Engineering) degree course, their vision should be unaided 0.5 (6/12) in each eye or 0.67 (6/9) in the better eye and 0.33 (6/18) in the other eye. Those applied for DNS, B.Sc. (Nautical Science) & B.Sc. (Maritime Science) degree course, their vision should be unaided 1.0 (6/6) in the better eye and 0.67 (6/9) in the other eye.
